I started BJJ with Jason in October 2005. I was uncomfortable going to a BJJ school and being "the new guy" so i decided to give a Jason a call. He came to my house for a private lesson and i have been hooked ever since. It was Jason's laid back personality and his love for BJJ that made me want to start training. Definitely train with Jason if you want to get in shape, learn BJJ,and have a great time. I am happy to able to call Jason a great teacher and friend.

Working with Jason was a vital part in the development of my jiu jitsu. He taught me it wasn't enough to just know the moves but to have concrete set ups. Jason opens your eyes to the different aspects of the game and will try his best to bring progress to his students. He's a dedicated instructor and a good friend. Training with him will elevate any ones game.

When I began training with Jason, I had no prior grappling experience. I had never wrestled, never done Judo, and certainly never had prior experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Jason is able to break techniques down into their natural parts, explaining how everything works in a manner that made it easy to learn. He teaches the principles behind the movements, so that they become a part of you, making it that much easier to learn the next move. Jason is very knowledgeable about the art of Grappling, and constantly looking for ways to improve both himself and his students.

Jason Scully is a very motivated individual with a high sense of respect for everyone he is around. His grappling classes are based on effective techniques and strategies needed to excel in the sport. The classes are very organized and well run, not to mention his attention to detail, which makes him a perfect instructor for beginners as well as advanced students.

Where do I begin? I have known Jason for about 7 years now. We met doing bjj at the rec center in Howell. Since then, we have become training partners, business partners and I am happy to say, very close friends. As a person, Jason is a stand up guy, who sticks to his beliefs and will not back down to anyone. As a teacher, Jason has taught me more then anyone(black belts included) about the sport of jiu jitsu. He has a passion for learning and teaching bjj that is unparalleled. He is very patient when it comes to teaching and is very knowledgeable on the subject. I am sad to see him move to a different school but am also looking forward to training with him in the future.

I trained under Jason Scully for about five months. When I started with Jason I had already had a few years of BJJ training under my belt but wanted to further my knowledge of the martial art. Jason provided me and my fellow training partners with a comfortable training environment which allowed everyone to learn effectively and efficiently regardless of previous experience. He was friendly and humble from the first day I met him and had a wealth of knowledge of BJJ both in the gi and without the gi, along with competition experience. Scully was active in competitions and believed in the value received from the competition experience. He is a calm individual who never seemed to get frustrated, and a teacher who you could tell took pride in seeing his students conquer their own personal goals. I had a pleasant and beneficial experience training under Jason Scully.

Since I began taking jiu-jitsu classes about a year ago, I've had the privilege of training with Jason many times. I always feel inspired and enlightened afterward. His love for jiu-jitsu and teaching is evident; he is always willing to share his extraordinary wealth of knowledge about the sport - breaking down moves and explaining them in a way that is simple and easy to understand. His technique is clean and efficient - beautiful to look at. He's also a lot of fun to train with, because he's so easy-going and patient, and he clearly enjoys his time spent on the mats.

Stefanie Gotta

Where do I begin, I have often said Jason Scully is a true student of BJJ. I've always been very impressed with Jason's knowledge of the sport, I refer to him as a walking BJJ encyclopedia. Jason is able to fully explain techniques and break down BJJ to it's simplest form. He makes training intense and fun at the same time. His teaching ability and character is something you will have a difficult time finding at another school. I've been a student of Jason's for over 3 years and I'm proud to call him my friend. I would recommend Jason's academy to anyone looking to train, from the BJJ competitor to the beginner. His message is simple, "No politics, just hard training".

When I first met Jason Scully I was walking around at 200lbs, out of shape and lacking focus in life. The every day 9 to 5 grind of being a business man in the city was eating away my desire to care about anything but work. Jason presented me with an opportunity to train in his advanced class to accommodate my busy work schedule although I had no jiu jitsu experience. I quickly found that Jason was not some guy running a McDojo, but a mentor and a good friend.

In three months of training I won my first jiu jitsu tournament at Grapplers Quest. The skill set of wrestling, judo and jiu jitsu that he taught me enabled me to beat competing students of some of the best jiu jitsu academies on the East Coast. Jason’s teaching style makes everyone he instructs feel like a winner by paying special attention to everyone, not just those who are excelling. Not only did Jason teach me, he counseled me on weight loss, mental stability and a new way to look at life. I was taught how to focus and brush away my frustrations with a deep breathe. He lifted all my doubts and fears of the unknown in the jiu jitsu room which is now my sanctuary of peace.

Now I walk around 20lbs. lighter, a champion and with the reassuring fact that my instructor is more than that title, he is my friend. Jason is an experienced world class grappler and one of the best athletic coaches I have ever had the privilege of training under. The man eats, sleeps, and lives grappling which is why he will take in any student who is willing to listen and learn. Jason Scully is a mentor that every aspiring grappler should come into contact with one day.

Okay guys here is the new Leo Vieira seminar dvd review a day early.

The DVD was broken down into 4 parts the Gi Portion, No Gi Portion, Leo and Penn rolling, and an Interview with Leo Vieira. Since there are four sections I will review the DVD in four sections as well.

Gi Seminar,

The DVD opens with Leo telling everyone to warm up by rolling at 50% he stresses that there should Be no strength used and that the bottom guy is to just continue to recover guard and not go for the submission and the top guy only passes.

Leo speaks about ways of passing the guard with different types of body controls and the importance of keeping your opponents back to the mat when trying to pass the guard. He then moves on to where to control the pants on your opponent when trying to pass and use a walk around pass.

Leo moves on to how to deal with when your opponent sits up when you control his legs, he shows you how to change your grip to the shoulder and keep your distance and do another walk around pass.

Leo shows how to pass when your opponent sits up but is able to grab your leg this time, he shows the knee though the middle pass or as I call it the baseball slide pass. Leo talks about the importance of the grips and pressure for the pass.

Leo shows you how he does the steering wheel guard pass, he shows the details of how he holds his opponent so he doesn't roll out and turtle and also how to stop him from recovering guard. The difference here is the way Leo controls his opponent for the pass, he doesn't go high into the collar for the pass but uses a lower control and then grabs his opponents pants with his other hand so he doesn't roll out. So it starts off as a steering wheel pass and turns into more of a leg over the shoulder pass.

Leo shows how to stop your opponent from blocking the pass with his hand on your hip.

At this point Murillo Bustamante shows up and makes a guest appearance taking pictures while leo is still teaching this has nothing to do with the seminar at all LOL.

Leo shows how to deal with an opponent tries to press you off and to go for a low knee ride.

Leo shows you how to control your opponent in side control and how to stop him from rolling into the turtle and then get a choke.

My thoughts on the Gi section were that the techniques seemed very much for the beginer and I found it surprising considering how many blue and up belts were at the seminar. The stuff he showed was good but is pretty much out there everywhere else. This section is seriously short with a handful of moves.

NO GI

Leo opens the this section having them warm up with some pummel drills and he talks about proper hand placement for the pummel. He then moves on to talk about the objective of the pummel is the double unders.

Leo moves on to show how to get the take down from the pummel position trapping your opponents elbow and getting the low body lock.

Leo now moves on with how to deal with your opponent from standing during the approach phase of standing. He shows how to get the arm drag to a single or take the back, this is a position he addressed in his Atlanta seminar dvd and is also on the Marcelo dvds as well.

Leo moves on to how to deal with when your opponent grabs your wrist and how to get a single, this is where the Alliance bjj influence is so obvious because Leos and Marcelos stand up game is almost exactly the same without the gi.

Leo again shoots the single and shows you how to take your opponent down with a trip or a take down.

Leo moves on to controlling the back while your opponent is still standing. This is a rehash of the Atlanta seminar. He shows a leg trip from behind. He then shows you how to get back control.

Leo moves on to passing the guard now, he shows a one leg gripped pass where you hug the leg tight then pass.

Leo moves on with how to deal with the sitting up guard and shows his signature way of passing.

Leo shows how to defend when you are on all four and he has you locked at the waist and you recover guard.

Leo now shows you how to deal with when your opponent rolls out of side control and goes for the single. he shows a choke from his position.

Leo explains that he didn't get to show a lot because it was a 3 hour seminar split and half and that he would like to come back for a month and show a lot of positions and go more slowly.

PENN and LEO rolling, it's a slow roll with neither going very hard at all and neither getting any position. Neither pass the guard and it's just a friendly roll. The point of this being worth the DVD on its own is really just BS, there was nothing special or very cool here it was a roll at like 40%.

Then Leo does an interview where he is funny and cracking jokes and you get to see his real personality which is very laid back and cracking jokes which is something you rarely get to see with him.

My thoughts on this set are that it's not really anything special I hate to say it, the gi section is weak and the no gi section wich is a lot better has a lot of rehash from his seminar dvd and from the Marcelos as well. I'm a huge Leozinho fan which is why I picked this up right away. I wouldn't recommend this if you have his other seminar at all and I wouldn't really recommend this if you have Marcelo's set.

There were no sub menus for the chapters and I just didn't see anything that really made me go wow! I'd be hard pressed to recommend this to anyone, his other seminar set was better and his century set is better.

There is a Leo set that isn't out yet that needs to be put out sooner then later because the guy is the real deal but has yet to really have the chance to shine. I would give this a 2 out of 5 stars.

I disagree. I enjoyed it. I wasnt expecting a full blown instructional set. For that I too would look else where. Good guard passing stuff. TD's were more useful then I would have thought after drilling them. And the footage of him and Bj rolling itself was priceless and I can only compare it to Rickson and Royler's bjj demo in japan. Smooth slick efforetless training.

If your looking for the "majic" pill for your game or a vid with some fancy schmancy moves that dont work then this one isnt for you. Leo's jiujitsu as technical as it seems is founded on the basics, leverage and weight control and bio-mechanics which I think this dvd shows pretty well. imo

Madtiger,

I'm glad you liked it, however I wasn't looking for an instructional but thank you for putting words in my mouth.

My problem stems from 1) The gi section was a joke, the passes were for white belts not for anyone who has been training for some time. If you thought those were a fresh new take on guard passing, well then you obviously don't see much instructionals. 2) The no gi section was almost an exact rehash of his last seminar dvd and also everything that is on the Marcelo's. There was nothing new here, if you thought the takedown section was useful, then that answers my prior question of how many instructionals you have truly seen, because those were on his last set and on the Marcelo's. 3)The rolling was slick and priceless and equal to Rickson and Royler from 97? Oh man, that's a fan boy talking right there, two guys rolling at 40% and not trying to show the other up while playing stalemate for a crowd is not priceless. The fact that you can only compare it to that footage really has me shaking my head.

Thanks for telling me what Leos game is based on, I would have never known his game is based on the basics, come to think of it, everyone who plays BJJ's game is based on the basics which again makes me wonder about your comments.

All this stuff is out there, nothing new is on this DVD that makes it worth anything special, it is a total rehash of his two other sets and the Marcelo's. The rolling was thrown in as an enticement to wet the mouth of fan boys and it obviously worked in your case. Maybe you should purchase a few more instructionals or at least the ones I mentioned here and then come back to me and tell me how fresh and solid this DVD really is!

I would also like to add, I didn't hide anything, everything that is on the DVD move wise I put on the thread. Anyone who can read and has seen other sets will know exactly what I'm talking about, but this obviously excludes you since you had no idea what I was talking about.
