I started BJJ with Jason in october 2005. I was uncomfortable going to a BJJ school and being "the new guy" so i decided to give a jason a call. He came to my house for a private lesson and i have been hooked ever since. It was Jason's laid back personality and his love for BJJ that made me want to start training. Definitely train with Jason if you want to get in shape, learn BJJ,and have a great time. I am happy to able to call Jason a great teacher and friend.

Carmen Spezzi
BJJ Blue Belt

Working with Jason was a vital part in the development of my jiu jitsu. He taught me it wasn't enough to just know the moves but to have concrete set ups. Jason opens your eyes to the different aspects of the game and will try his best to bring progress to his students. He's a dedicated instructor and a good friend. Training with him will elevate any ones game.

Jay P.
BJJ Blue Belt

When I began training with Jason, I had no prior grappling experience. I had never wrestled, never done Judo, and certainly never had prior experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Jason is able to break techniques down into their natural parts, explaining how everything works in a manner that made it easy to learn. He teaches the principles behind the movements, so that they become a part of you, making it that much easier to learn the next move. Jason is very knowledgeable about the art of Grappling, and constantly looking for ways to improve both himself and his students.

Joe M.
BJJ White Belt

Jason Scully is a very motivated individual with a high sense of respect for everyone he is around. His grappling classes are based on effective techniques and strategies needed to excel in the sport. The classes are very organized and well run, not to mention his attention to detail, which makes him a perfect instructor for beginners as well as advanced students.

Tinh Tupy
BJJ Purple Belt

Where do I begin? I have known Jason for about 7 years now. We met doing bjj at the rec center in Howell. Since then, we have become training partners, business partners and I am happy to say, very close friends. As a person, Jason is a stand up guy, who sticks to his beliefs and will not back down to anyone. As a teacher, Jason has taught me more then anyone(black belts included) about the sport of jiu jitsu. He has a passion for learning and teaching bjj that is unparalleled. He is very patient when it comes to teaching and is very knowledgable on the subject. I am sad to see him move to a different school but am also looking forward to training with him in the future.

Congratulations to this weekends NAGA competitors!
by: jasculs
2006-03-12 15:07:24

We at Jersey Shore BJJ would like to congratulate everyone for there efforts that competed at this past weekends North American Grappling Association tournament. We had a pretty large turnout of people representing our school this weekend with a total of 13 competitors. We never would have even imagined a couple years ago that we would have that many. Everyone who competed all worked hard and tried their best whether they won or lost and they all represented our school well showing their great attitude in the process.

The following people competed this weekend and represented Jersey Shore BJJ:

T.J. Prusakowski - T.J. placed 3rd in the Novice No-Gi Division which had a total of 40 competitors. He won 4 of his matches and lost 1. With T.J. there's no such thing as giving up. After waiting a very long time to compete and then having such a big division T.J. just shrugged it off and went into it full speed. He's a hard worker and we're all proud of him.

Dave Trapanese - Dave competed in the No-Gi Advanced Division and a controversial match by points. He competed with all of his heart and did well. Since he didn't place in the Advanced division he was allowed to compete in the No-Gi Intermediate Division. He won his first match by armbar and lost his second match by points. Dave T. is the perfect example of heart. Dave went out there and did his best and both during victory and defeat he always had a smile on his face and was having a good time. That kind of attitude is always something to look up too.

Greg Mihovich - Greg M. placed 2nd in the No-Gi Intermediate Division. Greg owns his own gym but trains with us once a week, and he is a great asset to have. He is extremely hard working and is tough as nails. We appreciate him being around and representing our team during the tournament. He is a very good person and deserves only the best things in life.

Jermaine Clay - Clay competed in the No-Gi Novice Division and went 2-1. He had a total of 31 competitors in his division. Clay is one of the newest and strongest additions to Jersey Shore BJJ. Clay is a pure example of hard work and determination. We all enjoy his presence and are glad he joined our school. He is one of the strongest guys you will ever meet, but also has one of the best attitudes of anyone you will meet. Thank you for joining out team Clay.

Scott Spencer - Scott competed in the No-Gi Intermediate Division. While he didn't place, Scott went out there and gave it his all. Ever since Scott first started competing he has caught the competition bug and had been competing ever since. Scott still did this tournament even though he didn't train for the last month. That just show's how much drive he has.

Constantine Hatzis - Constantine competed and had some hard fought battles with his opponent's. He showed a lot of heart when competing and also a lot of support for his teammates. Constantine is a pleasure to have around and he just keeps getting better and better as the days go by.

Jim Lepping - This was Jim's first No-Gi Submission Grappling and BJJ tournament. Jim competed in the No-Gi Intermediate Division first and lost his first match. He was allowed to competed in the Beginner division because he did not place. He placed 3rd in the beginners division out of a total of 40 competitors. Jim went 4-1 in the division. Jim is one of the nicest and laid back guys you will ever meet, but under that is someone who possess a lot of strength and skill. He knows how to train hard but still have a good time while he's doing it. We all enjoy having him around.

Carmin Spezzi - Carmin is currently a private student of Jason Scully, and is representing Jersey Shore BJJ. Carmin has only been training for 3 months and loves training in no-gi grappling. This was his first tournament and he went out there and gave it his all. He's excited to keep training and competing so he can excel to his full potential.

Jason Scully - Jason placed 3rd in the No-Gi Advanced Division. He lost his first match by a close score of 3-2 to American Top Team Black Belt Andre “ Gigueto” Soares. He then won his second match by points almost securing two close guillotines.

Once again we want to congratulate everyone who competed and thank them for representing us and being apart of our team and school. They all showed a lot of heart, spirit, and especially patience. Many of us had to wait 4 to 10 hours before our matches and we all did with patience and a good attitude.

We also always want to let the students that didn't compete know that we appreciate them being apart of our school. Without everyone together we wouldn't be what we are. Everyone is a true part of Jersey Shore BJJ and it shows with their great attitudes. We want everyone to know that we are grateful to have you as student's, training partners, and friends.

Team Jersey Shore BJJ

How I Stay In Shape by Scott Spencer
by: jasculs

"Conditioning is the greatest Hold" Karl Gotch

"Superior Fighters sometimes lose to opponents who are better conditioned. Physical conditioning is the platform from which all techniques are executed." Frank Mir in Grappling Magazine

Several people in class (Avon) asked me what i do to stay in shape. So i'll give a series of post on my personal weight workouts and some theories on how to reach certain goals with your training.

Before i start let me give a disclaimer about strength, power and edurance. Being strong isnt going to help you if you dont have good technique. You might be able to roll and run for a fight but you'll never win. Trust me, I know. Being busy and making it to class only 1-2 times a week proves that. My skill is slowly improving but the guys who come to class 3-4 times a week can beat me. Even when i'm stronger and better condidtioned.

Also one of the best ways to get your endurance up for rolling is actually rolling. Not jogging, not a spinning class, and not swimming. Get on the mat and roll for 3 rounds or so. When i started class back in January I was pleseantly surprised by my workouts giving me good endurance. But I'm still in better shape edurance wise now than i was then. And when i miss a few classes, if i dont keep up my personal workouts, I can feel a difference. So keep hitting the mat.

Scott Spencer
